Nikki and her husband Staley live in southeast Fircrest. She is the third of four sisters and grew up in University Place where her parents still reside. Nikki currently works in risk management as a credit and risk control lead for a local utility where she evaluates both private and public entities for financial soundness and credit stability.
Nikki’s family first found their way to Fircrest in 1970 after her grandfather, LTC Ernest Oliver Sr., retired from the army. His wartime service included WWII, Korea and Vietnam. He and her grandmother, Dorcas Oliver, settled in a home near what is now Thelma Gilmur Park and began long careers teaching in the Tacoma School District. Her grandparents instilled in her a strong work ethic and a no-nonsense approach to life (ask Nikki about the playground story…). Nikki has always felt drawn to the Fircrest community. She and her husband Staley purchased the home of her late grandparents in part because of the strong sense of community.
After graduating from Curtis Senior High School, she went on to complete dual undergraduate degrees in finance and economics at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, WA. From there Nikki began her career in private sector finance working for both large and small organizations in retirement and investment account operations. During this time, she thrived in fast paced and collaborative environments while undertaking multiple change management initiatives, increasing operational efficiencies, and improving cross-departmental communications in effort to maintain optimal effectiveness.
After 9 years in the private sector Nikki followed her interest in compliance and transitioned to the public sector. Nikki has a keen interest in continuous improvement and has championed many initiatives to develop and implement new processes and systematic approaches to enhance risk management effectiveness.
In her downtime Nikki enjoys being outdoors. She is an avid hiker and recently began outdoor rock climbing with her husband Staley. The majority of her family is located nearby and enjoy frequent gatherings, competitive rounds of Scattergories, and storytelling. Nikki is also a homebody and enjoys listening to music and working on house projects.
Nikki will bring to City Council her experiences in the financial industry, including evaluating organizations for fiscal responsibility and credit quality. Having successfully completed both large and small projects with cross-functional teams Nikki will work together with residents, City staff, and City Council Members to ensure that decisions are made with input and involvement from all stakeholders. She is proud to call Fircrest home and has a strong desire to work collaboratively with fellow Fircrest residents in the best interest of the community.
Nikki and Staley share their home with a loving golden retriever named Watson. If you see them out and about, Watson would absolutely love it if you stopped them for a hello and a head scratch!
They also have two roommates - a feisty 3 year old cat named Fuego, and the boss of the house, a 15 year old cat named Jerry.
Council members are elected to represent the citizens they serve. As a candidate and future council member I am committed to being available to you to ensure that we rise together as one community.
